The size of the bunion problem

Bunions are one of the most common of foot complaints seen by foot specialists in the UK.

Women are much more prone to developing bunions than men, with an estimated 30% of the UK suffering from them to some degree.

According to the largest study in the UK of people affected by bunions (Arthritis and Care Research – Prevalence and associations of hallux valgus in a primary care population), there is also a direct correlation between the age of a woman and the prevalence of bunions.  The results of which showed that the older you are the more likely you are to have them.

In the total UK population, around 15 million people have bunions, the majority of which are women over 45.

See the table below for the percentage of the UK population suffering from bunions between the ages of 30 and 59.

Age % of population
30-39 14
40-49 22
50-59 36

Taken from the study, this graph shows the prevalence of unilateral and bilateral hallux valgus by age.

This isn’t just a UK problem. It’s estimated that around 30% of every western country suffers from bunions and until footwear fashion choices change, the numbers of women suffering with them is unlikely to change.
